Although seemingly incongrous, quitting what is called "Christianity" and still adhering to the message of Christ are not at all incompatible in our times! In biblical times, it took guts to proclaim the name of Christ and live by His dictates, as one could easily forfeit his/her life by so doing.
Now, any two-bit hater can call him/herself a "Christian," and even get away with it by attending buildings called "churches" that house people who engage in incestuous socialization, convincing themselves and, unfortunately, many others that when they are homophobic and exclusionary they are fulfilling the will of Christ and speaking in the name of God.
Nothing could be further from the truth! Jesus hung around with the pariahs of society and saved his harshest words for the legalists and perfectionists of His time who sought to put yokes of bondage onto others. Just read the Gospels in the New Testament and see for yourself!
Our modern day pharisees can all too often be found to attend "churches," many of whom seek to proclaim their own prejudicial and ignorant interpretations of certain selected biblical passages as being part of "the word of God," and thereby cause the untold suffering of others by their perversion of everything that Jesus stood for.
Anyone who demeans another; anyone who bears false witness against another; anyone who condemns and judges another; anyone who seeks to deprive others of equal rights; anyone who in any way discriminates against others, is not a disciple of Christ!
Anne Rice seems to understand this basic principle that resonates with all those whom Jesus called out to be His disciples!
